The wild Anise Myrtle trees in the mid north New South Wales were harvested in World War
Two, when traditional Aniseed essential oil was in short supply. In the late 1980s a native
food pioneer and promoters near Byron Bay rediscovered the plant's food and essential oil
potential. Anise Myrtle essential oil was reborn. Anise Myrtle is a rare rainforest tree of up
to 45 meters in height, only found naturally in the Bellinger and Nambucca Valleys of mid
north New South Wales. Grown in plantations in Australia, the leaves and green branchlets
are mechanically harvested, and then steam distilled producing the essential oil.
